Spearmint Tea

The Broad Spectrum Of Benefits You Get From Drinking Spearmint Tea

The spearmint plant (mentha spicata) has been used for centuries to treat a wide variety of problems. The Romans and other cultures in the Mediterranean used it initially to stimulate the mind and senses because it’s so refreshing when you drink it – you get an instant kind of pick-me-up afterwards. The plant itself gets its name from the pointed leaves it has which look a little bit like the tip of a spear. Until I was researching spearmint tea it never occurred to me where the plant got its name.

But this tea is different to pretty much every other tea because it contains absolutely no caffeine. This won’t appeal to some people but if you enjoy a cup of tea later in the evening then at least the lack of caffeine in spearmint tea means you won’t be awake half the night with caffeine based insomnia.

So what are the benefits of drinking spearmint tea?

Body Hair Problems
Amazingly enough this tea can be used to treat hirsutism in women – which basically means it can be used to treat excessive body hair growth on a woman. All women have body hair but if they have an androgen (a male hormone) imbalance in their body it can cause hair to grow on their faces, breasts, stomach, back and legs. This isn’t something any woman wants but simply drinking a few cups of spearmint tea each day can be enough to get rid of all but the most extreme cases of hirsutism in women.

For this type of treatment for body hair problems to be most effective it’s recommended that you combine it with lowering your carb intake too.

Pregnancy
This tea can help with morning sickness once you’re pregnant and also help regulate your menstrual cycle which can help with you becoming pregnant in the first place. On top of that it also seems to be effective in treating PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) which can also cause problems in getting pregnant. And last but not least it’s also good for treating heartburn and hiccups – two things that pregnant women are normally plagued with.

That being said pregnant women should only consume this tea in very small amounts – large doses can cause problems during pregnancy. Never start any treatment (natural or otherwise) without consulting your doctor first.

Libido
Now here’s an odd one. If men and women drink large amounts of spearmint tea it can dramatically reduce their libido (sex drive). I’m not sure this is something that anyone wants as a side-effect of an herbal tea treatment though? Maybe for people who are working away from home for months at a time?

An Acne Treatment
Because this plant leaf can be used in treating androgen problems it appears that it can also be used as an effective treatment for acne. Most people tend to suffer from acne problems when their hormones go crazy as teenagers. But for some people this problem can remain later in their adult life. Drinking between 3 and 5 cups of spearmint tea each day seems to be enough to combat even the worst acne problems.

Indigestion
If you find that you suffer from indigestion on a regular basis spearmint tea can really help with this. All you need to do is drink a single cup of reasonably strong spearmint tea after your meal and it can deal with all but the most severe of indigestion and acid reflux problems. It’s also effective if you get heartburn from drinking strong alcohol or spirits.

Relaxation
Last but not least spearmint tea is also very relaxing and refreshing just being consumed as a normal cup of tea at the end of a long day in work.

So if you want a tea that is great for your health in moderate amounts and won’t keep you awake all night then spearmint tea is perfect for you.

All these benefits are primarily derived from natural chemical constituents in ginseng, called “ginsenosides“.

Ginseng tea is believed to have existed since more than 5000 years ago. Ancient Chinese people call it ‘Ren Shen’ and is believed to cure various diseases.

This tea only reduces hair growth on parts of the body other than the head right? I mean, it wouldn`t reduce hair growth on the head would it?

My husband has e.d. and I’m at my “peak”. I’ve read about spearmint tea’s reducing libido before, but wanted to double check. Now that I see it can not only save my marriage, but also maybe get me off daily heartburn meds, I’m all for it! ;) Thank you so much for this article.
